Doyle, Richard (1824–83), illustrator, designed the cover of Punch (with Mr Punch, Toby, and a margin of nymphs, goblins, and satyrs) that lasted from 1844 to 1956. He illustrated chiefly fairy stories, including Ruskin's The King of the Golden River (1851) and W. Allingham's In Fairyland (1870), and also some of Dickens's Christmas Books; and published books of annotated drawings, including The Foreign Tour of Brown, Jones and Robinson (1854), whose comic adventures he had depicted in Punch.

Richard Doyle 1824–83, English caricaturist, water colorist, and illustrator. He was the son and pupil of John Doyle, a popular caricaturist. His Journal (British Mus.), a book of sketches done at the age 15, shows his extraordinary precocity. He worked on the staff of Punch (1843–50), and drew the famous cover design. Doyle illustrated some of Thackeray's works.
