Rephaim

Rephaim Inhabitants of Transjordan before the arrival of the Israelites (Deut. 2: 11). The name is also applied to the ‘giants’ (NRSV) from Philistia (2 Sam. 21: 16; 18, 20, REB), and to giants who exist as ‘shades’ (Isa. 26: 14) in the underworld but with their earthly status intact (Isa. 14: 9).
