Rehoboth
Rehoboth, Namibia, USA 1. Namibia: originally Anis ‘Steam’ because of the hot springs here. In 1844 it was given a biblical name by a German missionary, who built a church here as the centre of a mission station. The name means ‘Large Spaces’.2. USA (Massachusetts): although the name has the same meaning ‘Large Spaces’ or perhaps ‘Ample Room’, it is not clear to whom credit should be given or precisely why. One theory claims that it was William Blackstone who founded the town, his aim being to provide ‘room outside the narrow confines of Puritan intolerance’; another, that it was the Revd Samuel Newman who built a church here and gave thanks that ‘the Lord hath made room for us’ (Genesis 26: 22).
