Reggio nell' Emilia

Reggio nell' Emilia , city (1991 pop. 132,030), capital of Reggio nell' Emilia prov., in Emilia-Romagna, N central Italy, on the Aemilian Way. It is an agricultural and major industrial center and a rail junction. Manufactures include food products, metals, machinery, and electrical equipment. Founded by Rome in the 2d cent. BC, it later became a free commune and in 1289 came under the Este family. Points of interest include the 13th-century cathedral, the Renaissance Church of the Madonna della Ghiara, and the Parmeggiani art gallery. The poet Ariosto was born in Reggio in 1474.

Reggio nell'Emilia, Emilia‐Romagna/Italy Regium Lepidi ‘Royal (Town) in Emilia’ and previously ‘Royal (Town) of Lepidus’ from the Latin regius ‘royal’ and the Italian nell' ‘in the’. It was founded in the 2nd century bc by Marcus Aemilius Lepidus (d. 152 bc), a Roman statesman who also gave his name to Emilia.
