Redding

Redding city (1990 pop. 66,462), seat of Shasta co., N central Calif., on the Sacramento River; inc. 1872. A principal tourist center for a mountain and lake region, it also has lumbering, food-processing, and diverse manufacturing. Redding is one of the fastest-growing U.S. cities. Simpson Univ. is there. Attractions include the Turtle Bay art and history museum, the Sundial Bridge, and an arboretum. Nearby are Shasta Dam , Lake Shasta Caverns, Lassen Volcanic National Park , Lava Beds National Monument (see National Parks and Monuments , table), Whiskeytown Lake, and McArthur-Burney Falls Memorial State Park.
