Raymond fitz William
Raymond fitz William, called ‘le Gros’, Cambro‐Norman adventurer, and associate of Strongbow, who sent him to Ireland around May 1170 in advance of his own expedition. On landing, Raymond erected a fortification at Dún Domnaill, alias Baginbun, and successfully defended himself against an attack by the men of Waterford. He acted as Strongbow's emissary to Henry II before the English king intervened in person in Ireland. He left with Henry in 1172, returned in 1173, left again dissatisfied at his lack of rewards, but returned to assume command of Strongbow's troops on being promised Strongbow's sister Basilia in marriage and lands in Leinster. His military exploits are recorded in exaggerated detail by his kinsman Gerald of Wales, who also described his overweight, which accounted for his nickname. He died without heirs sometime after 1189.
