Hodgson, Ralph Edwin
Hodgson, Ralph Edwin (1871–1962), poet. His first collection of poems was The Last Blackbird (1907). He established his reputation with Poems (1917), a volume which contains one of his most ambitious visionary works, ‘A Song of Honour’. Some of his work was published in Georgian Poetry. The Skylark and Other Poems (1958) contained, among many shorter works, two important long poems: ‘To Deck a Woman’, a passionate protest against man's cruelty to the animal world, and ‘The Muse and the Mastiff’. The Collected Poems were published in 1961.

Ralph Hodgson
Ralph Hodgson 1871–1962, English poet. He wrote five volumes of poetry before his collected poems appeared in 1917. After a silence of nearly 40 years—during which time he taught in Japan and emigrated to the United States—he published two more volumes. Hodgson treated his subject matter, nature, lyrically and simply. Some of his poems, e.g., "Eve" and "Time, You Old Gypsy Man," have been highly acclaimed. |
