Rahab
Rahab
1. A prostitute with a house conveniently built into the wall of Jericho (Josh. 2) who entertained the Israelite spies and helped them to escape their pursuers. In return, she and her household were spared when the city was later captured and sacked. In the NT Rahab is regarded as a heroine (Heb. 11: 31 and Jas. 2: 25) and is included by Matthew (1: 5) in the genealogy of Jesus. 2. A mythical monster killed by God in order that out of chaos God could create the world (Isa. 51: 9; Ps. 89: 10). It becomes also a symbolic name for Egypt (Ps. 87: 4; Isa. 30: 7). |
