Merry del Val, Rafael

Merry del Val, Rafael (1865–1930), cardinal. Singled out by Leo XIII for Papal service, he was secretary of the commission which pronounced against Anglican Ordinations (1896). In 1903 he was made cardinal and Secretary of State by Pius X, with whose intransigent policy he became identified. He had a strong pastoral sense.
