Pulcinella
Pulcinella, one of the zanni or comic servant masks of the commedia dell'arte, a humpbacked, doltish fellow. In his Italian form he originated from Naples. Little is known of his roles or of his original dress, but he is important as the ancestor of the French Polichinelle and the English Punch. Some Italian critics believe that the popularity of Pulcinella and the disproportionate attention paid to his buffoonery was one of the main reasons for the decline of the commedia dell'arte.
