Post Office Protocol

Post Office Protocol

Post Office Protocol A very simple PROTOCOL which mediates between client computers running EMAIL software and an EMAIL SERVER. The protocol consists of a series of messages which can be sent to and received from the server. For example, the message STAT, when sent from the client, interrogates the server about the number of email messages that are waiting for the user. This protocol is very straightforward and efficient and, consequently, there are a large number of organizations currently using it. It is, however, limited: for example, it does not allow the user to transfer a subset of emails from a MAILBOX and is not suitable for users have multiple computers to access mail.
