Port Hope

Port Hope, Canada, USA Canada (Ontario): established as a trading post in 1778 and named Smith's Creek after its owner. Having been renamed Toronto, it was then renamed again in 1817 after Colonel Henry Hope, lieutenant‐governor of Quebec (1785–9).

Port Hope town (1991 pop. 11,505), SE Ont., Canada, on Lake Ontario, E of Toronto. It has a large plant for refining uranium ore and is a summer resort.
