Port Chester, New York/USA Saw Pits Founded in the 1660s with a name that alluded to its timber industry. In 1837 it was renamed, possibly after the city of Chester or the county of Cheshire in England. On the coast, ‘Port’ was added to distinguish it from other cities simply called Chester, of which there is one in New York State and others in nearby states.
