Pontefract

Pontefract, England/UK Pontefracto, Pontfreit ‘Broken Bridge’ from the Latin pons ‘bridge’ and fractus ‘broken’. It is unusual for a name to be derived directly from the Latin. The local Anglo‐Norman pronunciation, however, was Pomfret or Pumfrit. The town gives its name to liquorice Pomfret cakes.
