Pomfret cakes are licorice lozenges made there. West of Pontefract is a racecourse. Situated on the edge of coal fields, Pontefract grew around a castle built in the 11th cent. on the site of a Saxon fort. Pontefract
Pontefract, England/UK Pontefracto, Pontfreit ‘Broken Bridge’ from the Latin pons ‘bridge’ and fractus ‘broken’. It is unusual for a name to be derived directly from the Latin. The local Anglo‐Norman pronunciation, however, was Pomfret or Pumfrit. The town gives its name to liquorice Pomfret cakes.
