Plains of Abraham fairly level field adjoining the upper part of the city of Quebec, Canada. There, in 1759, the English under Gen. James Wolfe defeated the French under Gen. Louis Montcalm. The battle decided the last of the French and Indian Wars and led to British supremacy in Canada. Part of the battle site is now built over, but a part is preserved as a national park.

Plains of Abraham, Battle of the (13 September 1759) A battle during the FRENCH AND INDIAN WARS that took place on a plateau above the city of Quebec, Canada. WOLFE ferried British troops up the St Lawrence past the French fort. Having tricked the sentries into believing them to be French, the British climbed the precipitous Heights of Abraham. In the ensuing battle, the French garrison under MONTCALM was routed and Quebec surrendered. Both commanders died but the British victory ended French rule in Canada.
