Mascagni, Pietro
Mascagni, Pietro (b Leghorn, 1863; d Rome, 1945). It. composer and conductor. Joined touring opera co. as cond. Settled as pf. teacher at Cerignola. In 1889 won first prize in competition sponsored by publisher Sonzogno with 1-act opera Cavalleria rusticana. The abundant success of this work overshadowed his remaining operas, and the assertion that he is a one-opera composer (verismo at that) has only recently been challenged. In his later years he associated himself with Mussolini's Fascist régime. Pietro Mascagni
Pietro Mascagni , 1863–1945, Italian operatic composer. He is known for his opera Cavalleria rusticana (1890), based on the tale by Giovanni Verga; it is a classic example of the style of realism known as verismo. His other operas were less successful. |
