Francavilla, Pietro
Francavilla, Pietro ( Pierre de Francheville or Pietro Francqueville) (b Cambrai, c.1548; d Paris, 25 Aug. 1615). Franco-Netherlandish sculptor active mainly in Italy and usually known by the Italian form of his name. He settled in Florence in about 1570 and worked extensively with Giambologna (as his partner, rather than merely as an assistant). In 1604 he moved to Paris to execute the four bronze figures of slaves for Giambologna's equestrian statue of Henry IV for the Pont Neuf; the statue itself is destroyed, but Francavilla's figures (not cast until 1618, after his death) are in the Louvre. In both bronze and marble he was a highly accomplished exponent of Giambologna's style.
