Sotie
Sotie, topical and satirical play of medieval France, whose best-known author is Pierre Gringore (c.1475–1538). The sotie was not a farce, though the two forms had elements in common, and it was often inspired by political or religious intrigue. It was intended for amusement only and had no moral purpose, though it often served as a prelude to a mystery or morality play. The actors, or sots (fools), wore the traditional fool's costume—dunce's cap, short jacket, tights, and bells on their legs. Soties were acted not only by amateur companies of students and law clerks but by semi-professional and more or less permanent companies, somewhat in the tradition of the commedia dell'arte, each with its own repertory. There are a number of extant texts, of which the Recueil Trepperel is the most representative.
