Piedmont city (1990 pop. 10,602), Alameda co., W Calif., a suburb of Oakland; inc. 1907. It is a hilly, residential city. Many of its homes enjoy a spectacular view of the San Francisco Bay area.

Piedmont, Italy, USA Italy: a region whose local name, Piemonte, is derived from the Old Italian pie di monte ‘foot of the mountain’, a reference to its position at the foot of the Alps. It was part of the Kingdom of Sardinia in 1720–1861 and was instrumental in uniting Italy in 1861 under Victor Emmanuel II (1820–78), King of Sardinia (1849–78) and King of Italy (1861–78).
