Phyllis McGinley

Phyllis McGinley 1905-78, American poet, b. Ontario, Oreg. Her light verse treats aspects of modern life with humor and underlying seriousness. Among her best-known collections of verse are A Pocketful of Wry (1940), The Love Letters of Phyllis McGinley (1950), and Times Three (1960; Pulitzer Prize). She also wrote many light essays as well as criticism, children's books, and song lyrics. Saint-Watching (1969) recounts the lives of various saints with irreverence and affection.

McGinley, Phyllis (1905–78),Oregon‐born author of light verse, educated at the universities of Utah and California, resident in New York. Her collections include On the Contrary (1934), A Pocketful of Wry (1940), Stones from a Glass House (1946), A Short Walk from the Station (1951), The Love Letters of Phyllis McGinley (1954), Merry Christmas, Happy New Year (1958), and Times Three: Selected Verse from Three Decades (1960, Pulitzer Prize). Other works include children's books; lyrics for the revue Small Wonder (1948); and Province of the Heart (1959) and Sixpence in Her Shoe (1964), light essays on suburban life.
