Philadelphia (Turkey)

Philadelphia

Philadelphia name of several ancient cities. One was in Lydia, W Asia Minor (now W Turkey). At the foot of Mt. Tmolus and near the location of modern Alaşehir , it was founded in the 2d cent. BC by Attalus II Philadelphus of Pergamum. One of the Seven Churches in Asia was there (Rev. 3.7). The city was damaged several times by earthquakes. Amman was also renamed Philadelphia by Ptolemy II.

Philadelphia

Philadelphia One of the Seven cities whose Churches are addressed in Rev. (1: 11; 3: 7), in western Asia Minor (modern Turkey). It was important for trade and communication but was subject to earthquakes. The Church there had remained faithful during persecution from a faction of Jews.
