Perdita

Perdita ♀ A Shakespearean coinage, borne by a character in The Winter's Tale (1610). The feminine form of Latin perditus ‘lost’, it has a clear reference to the events of the play, and this is explicitly commented on in the text. The name is now more closely associated in some people's minds with a (canine) character in Dodie Smith's One Hundred and One Dalmatians (1956), made into a film by Walt Disney.

Perdita in Shakespeare's Winter's Tale, the lost daughter of Leontes and Hermione who is brought up as a shepherdess; her name means ‘the lost one’.

The actress Mary Robinson (1758–1800), mistress of George, Prince of Wales, afterwards George IV, was known as Perdita after her success in the part.
