Moreelse, Paulus
Moreelse, Paulus (b Utrecht, 1571; d Utrecht, 5 Mar. 1638). Dutch painter and architect, active in his native Utrecht, where he was the first dean of the painters' guild, founded in 1611. He painted various types of picture, including portraits (similar to those of his teacher Miereveld, but less severe) and religious works. More interesting than these are his Arcadian scenes with shepherds and shepherdesses; he was one of the first Dutch artists to paint such pictures. As an architect he designed the Catherine Gate (destroyed) and possibly the façade of the Meat Market in Utrecht. He served on the town council and was involved in founding Utrecht's university in 1636.
