His studies include Les Manuscrits françois de la Bibliothèque du Roi (7 vol., 1836-48) and Les Romans de la Table ronde (5 vol., 1868-77). His son, Bruno Paulin Gaston Paris, 1839-1903, was a noted Romance philologist. Carrying on the work his father began, he edited the Revue critique, founded the journal Romania, and wrote critical and historical works on literature.

Déjazet, Pauline-Virginie

Déjazet, Pauline-Virginie (1798–1875), French actress, who was already well known for her male impersonations in vaudeville when in 1821 she appeared at the Gymnase, where she remained for some time, playing male roles. In 1831 she went to the newly opened Palais-Royal, where she stayed for 13 years and became one of the most popular actresses in Paris. After an argument over her salary she continued her triumphant career at the Variétés and the Gaîté, still playing masculine roles—soldiers, collegians, students—as well as great ladies and pretty peasant girls. Some idea of her versatility is given by the fact that her parts included Voltaire, Rousseau, Napoleon, and Henri IV. In 1859 she took over the Folies-Nouvelles, which she renamed Théâtre Déjazet, making a great hit at the age of 62 in a male part in Sardou's Monsieur Garat. She made her last appearance in Paris in 1870, and in the same year was seen in London at the Opera Comique in a season of French plays.
