Horgan, Paul (1903–95), born in Buffalo, N.Y., reared there and in New Mexico. His novels include The Fault of Angels (1933), about professional musicians; The Habit of Empire (1939), about 16th‐century New Mexico; A Distant Trumpet (1960), set on an Arizona army post of the 1880s; and Things as They Are (1964), beginning a trilogy about the life and early death of a rich young man in Philadelphia and New Mexico, continued in Everything To Live For (1968) and The Thin Mountain Air (1977). Figures in a Landscape (1940) and The Peach Stone (1967) collect stories, the former with essays. Great River (1954), a history of the Rio Grande, earned him a Pulitzer Prize, as did Lamy of Santa Fe (1975), a study of a pioneer bishop. Lincoln figures in Yours, A. Lincoln (1942), a play; Citizen of New Salem (1961), an essay; and Songs After Lincoln (1965), poetic tributes. Historical studies include Centuries of Santa Fe (1956) and Conquistadors in North American History (1963). Tracings, a Book of Partial Portraits (1993) gives affectionate sketches of the famous artists in many fields Horgan knew.
