Gerhardt, Paul
Gerhardt, Paul (1607–76), German Lutheran hymn-writer. He held important pastoral offices. Though in his theology he was an uncompromising Lutheran, he was susceptible to the influence of Catholic mysticism, and one of his hymns, ‘O sacred head, sore wounded’, is based on the ‘Salve caput cruentatum’ attributed to St Bernard. Many of his hymns are widely known.
