Cleburne, Patrick Ronayne

Cleburne, Patrick Ronayne ˈklēbərn (1828–64) Confederate army officer, born in Ireland. Cleburne fought at Shiloh (1862) and, after promotion by Jefferson Davis to major general that same year, at Stones River (1862–63) and Chickamauga (1863). He was killed at the Battle of Franklin (1864).

Cleburne is best remembered for advocating the enlistment of slaves in the army and rewarding service with emancipation; Cobb believed the Confederate patriot should “give up the negro slave rather than be a slave himself.” His position, however, prevented further career advancements.
