Paps

Paps

Paps ( Dr Waldemar Rusche) (1882–1965). Germany's most famous naive painter, born at Naumburg. An internationally distinguished ophthalmologist, he was head of the eye clinic in the hospital of St Josef Stift in Bremen and began to paint after retiring at the age of 70. His subjects included scenes remembered from his travels as a young ship's doctor (he was particularly fond of harbour scenes), flower pieces, and the life around his North German home. His style was colourful and lively. The nickname by which he is known is German for ‘Dad'.
