Pai-chang-ch'ing-kuei
Pai-chang-ch'ing-kuei Chinese work whose name means ‘The Pure Rule of Pai-chang’. The title denotes a set of monastic regulations for Ch'an monasteries, and can refer to one of two works. The first is a set of rules first devised by the T'ang-dynasty Ch'an monk Pai-chang Huai-hai (749–814), that formalized what had previously been a set of ad hoc regulations put into effect by Ch'an communities whose size necessitated formal structures, rules, and procedures. Pai-chang's original ‘Pure Rules’ are no longer extant. The second is a work published in 1338 under the direction of the emperor. Separated from Pai-chang by some five centuries, it is doubtful that the contents of this rule, found in the Taishō canon as document 2025, reflect those of the original.
