Chayefsky, Paddy
Chayefsky, Paddy (1923–1981), born in New York City, after graduation from City College and army service in World War II became a writer of television dramas and a producer of films and legitimate plays. His works include Marty (1953, TV; 1955, film), a direct, sympathetic treatment of the romance of a lonely Bronx butcher and a spinster schoolteacher. The Bachelor Party (1954, TV; 1957, film) and The Catered Affair (1955, TV; 1956, film) also blend reportorial realism about commonplace people with a sentimental attitude toward their problems. A dedication to Judaism is seen in The Tenth Man (1959), a play using the theme of the Dybbuk but set in the Bronx, and in Gideon (1961). Another stage play, The Passion of Josef D. (1964), is a morality with music, depicting Stalin, Trotsky, and Lenin during the Russian Revolution. Six of his works are collected in Television Plays (1955). Later works include The Latent Heterosexual (1968), a play; Network (1975), a film he wrote and produced; and Altered States (1978), a science fiction novel.
