Otaru

Otaru, Hokkaidō/Japan A coastal city and port, the characters indicate ‘Keg’ from o ‘small’ and taru ‘barrel’ or ‘cask’. Otaru used to be the name for a river from ota ‘sand’ and nai ‘river’; this was misread as Otarunai which was shortened to Otaru. Otarunai/Otaru can also mean ‘Sandy Beach’ from ota and ru ‘path’ since there were several routes along the beach.
