Hammerstein, Oscar (II)

Hammerstein, Oscar (II) (b NY, 1895; d Doylestown, Penn., 1960). Amer. librettist and producer, grandson of above. Wrote mus. comedy Always You in 1920. Then with Otto Harbach worked on a number of shows. In 1927 collab. with Kern on Show Boat, later with Romberg, Friml, Gershwin, and most notably with Richard Rodgers in Oklahoma! (1943), Carousel (1945), Allegro (1947), South Pacific (1949), The King and I (1951), Flower Drum Song (1958), and The Sound of Music (1959). Wrote lib. for Carmen Jones (1943), the brilliant adaptation of Carmen as an Amer. musical.

Hammerstein, Oscar II

Hammerstein, Oscar II (1895–1960), grandson of Oscar Hammerstein, was the author of librettos and lyrics for musical plays, written with such composers as Gershwin, Kern, and Richard Rodgers. His works include Rose‐Marie (1924), Sunny (1924), The Desert Song (1926), Show Boat (1927), Oklahoma! (1943), Carmen Jones (1943), Carousel (1945), South Pacific (1949, Pulitzer Prize), The King and I (1951), Flower Drum Song (1958), and The Sound of Music (1959).
