Kiprensky, Orest
Kiprensky, Orest (b Oranienbaum district, Petersburg province, 24 Mar. 1782; d Rome, 24 Oct. 1836). Russian painter, active for much of his career in Italy. He was the leading Russian portraitist of the Romantic era, combining the then fashionable attitude of ‘Byronic’ melancholy with an elegance that earned him the nickname ‘the Russian van Dyck’.
