Omri
Omri . 1 King of Israel. He was a general in the army of Elah, and on the king's death at the hands of Zimri 1, Omri proclaimed himself king. Soon after this Zimri killed himself. Omri defeated Tibni, a pretender, and moved his capital from Tirzah to Samaria, thenceforth the chief city of Israel. Omri is mentioned on the Moabite stone and on Assyrian inscriptions, which call Israel "the land of Omri." Omri was in close touch with the Syrian petty kingdoms, and his son Ahab's marriage with Jezebel was a result of this alliance. 1 Kings 16.16-28; 20.34. 2 Benjamite. 1 Chron. 7.8. 3 Judahite. 1 Chron. 9.4. 4 Issacharite. 1 Chron. 27.18. |

Omri
Omri Proclaimed king of Israel after a coup in 885 BCE (1 Kgs. 16: 15 ff.); he established his capital at Samaria (1 Kgs. 16: 24), appropriately for a new dynasty, and assyrian inscriptions long regarded Israel as ‘Omri's country’.
Omri was astute in his dealings with Israel's neighbours and gave his country prosperity; but his alliances (he gave his son Ahab in marriage to the Phoenician Jezebel) allowed pagan practices into the land, for which he is roundly condemned by the Deuteronomic editor of 1 Kgs. 16: 25–6. |

Omri
Omri ♂ Jewish: Hebrew name, possibly derived from an element meaning ‘sheaf of grain’. It is borne in the Bible by a king of Israel who built the city of Samaria, but who also ‘wrought evil in the eyes of the Lord’ (1 Kings 16:23–28). This has not prevented Omri from being used as a modern given name.
