Oberammergau
Oberammergau , town (1994 pop. 5,343), Bavaria, S Germany, in the Bavarian Alps. It has been a noted center of woodcarving since the 12th cent. Oberammergau is famous for the Passion play performed there every 10 years (most recently in 2000), originally (1634) in fulfillment of a vow made during a plague in 1633. Tourism is the town's major source of income. There are numerous fresco-decorated houses and a rococo church.

Oberammergau
Oberammergau, in Upper Bavaria. In 1633 the villagers vowed that if God would rid them of the plague, they would at ten-year intervals enact a play recalling Christ's Passion and Resurrection. The play, first performed in 1634, since 1680 has usually been staged in the deciminal years. It has been rewritten several times. It takes over 5 hours, with up to 850 people on the stage, plus 100 musicians and some animals.

Oberammergau
Oberammergau a village in the Bavarian Alps of SW Germany, which is the site of the most famous of the few surviving passion plays, which has been performed by the villagers every tenth year (with few exceptions) from 1634 as a result of a vow made during an epidemic of plague.
