Obafemi Awolowo

Obafemi Awolowo , 1909-87, Nigerian statesman, a Yoruba chief, commonly known as "Awo." In politics from 1940, he was one of the founders (1943) of the Nigerian Trades Union Congress. In 1950 he founded the Action Group, a new political party. Elected (1959) to Nigeria's house of representatives, he became leader of the opposition. Sentenced to 10 years for his party's attempted coup (1962), he was released in 1966. He was a leader against the Biafran secession and was federal Finance Minister until 1971. After military rule, he founded the United Party of Nigeria and placed second in the presidential elections of 1979 and 1982.

Awolowo, Obafemi (b. 6 Mar. 1909, d. 9 May 1987). Nigerian statesman Son of a peasant of the Yoruba people, he was a newspaper reporter and trade union leader until he went to London, where he qualified as a lawyer in 1944. During this time, he wrote Path to Nigerian Freedom, in which he argued for internal autonomy of each Nigerian tribe within a loose federation. Back in Nigeria, he founded the Action Group to preserve Yoruba culture in 1951. He became Premier of Western Nigeria in 1954. In 1963 he was imprisoned for allegedly conspiring to overthrow the federal government, but he was released in 1966 by Gowon, whom he supported in the Biafran War against the Ibo people. In 1978 he founded the Nigerian Unity Party and stood for President. He was defeated and his party banned in 1983.
