OSI Reference Model

OSI Reference Model

OSI Reference Model A major reference standard for networks. Most network standards have either been inspired by or can be discussed with respect to this model. For example, the architecture of TCP-IP is very similar to the OSI model, apart from the fact that it combines some of the functions of the layers into a single layer. The OSI Reference Model is partitioned into seven layers. These are the APPLICATION LAYER, PRESENTATION LAYER, SESSION LAYER, TRANSPORT LAYER, NETWORK LAYER, DATA LINK LAYER, and PHYSICAL LAYER. The application layer is where applications such as EMAIL reside. The presentation layer converts data generated by an application into a common format that other layers can understand. The session layer controls the flow of data between applications. The transport layer supervises the transport of data from one computer on a network to another and checks that data sent is received. The network layer handles the routing of data from one computer to another and determines the path that it takes. The data link layer detects and handles any errors which occur because of poor transmission: for example, errors that are caused by electrical interference. Finally, the physical layer is responsible for the transmission of data at the hardware level: the sending of packets of binary data from one computer to another.
