O'Higgins

O'Higgins, Chile A lake, a cape on Easter Island, a point on Robinson Crusoe Island and a region called, in full, Libertador General Bernardo O'Higgins. All are named after Bernardo O'Higgins (c.1778–1824), who was instrumental in defeating the Spanish in 1817 and paving the way for Chilean independence the next year. He became the first Chilean head of state (1817–23). His father was a Spanish officer of Irish descent.
