Nuuk

Nuuk, Greenland/Denmark Godthåb Founded near a 10th‐century Norse settlement in 1721 by Hans Egede, a Norwegian missionary, who called it ‘Good Hope’ from the Danish godt ‘good’ and håb ‘hope’, possibly because he had high hopes of converting the local population. It was renamed in 1979 and given an Inuktitut name meaning ‘Summit’ or ‘Promontory’. It is Greenland's capital and thus ‘summit’ could refer to its status.
