Novecento Italiano

The Oxford Dictionary of Art | 2004 | | Copyright

Novecento Italiano (Italian 20th Century). Association of Italian artists, founded in 1922; it aimed to reject European avant-garde movements and revive a naturalistic type of art based on classical Italian tradition. The Novecento had no clear artistic programme (although it wished to revive large-scale figurative compositions) and numbered within its ranks artists of very different styles and temperaments, among them Carrà and Marini. Increasingly it came to be associated with Fascist propaganda and during the 1930s it was the main bastion of reactionary attitudes. It disbanded in 1943.

Novecento Italiano (Italian 20th Century). Association of Italian artists, founded in 1922; it aimed to reject European avant-garde movements and revive a naturalistic type of art based on classical Italian tradition. The Novecento had no clear artistic programme (although it wished to revive large-scale figurative compositions) and numbered within its ranks artists of very different styles and temperaments, among them Carrà and Marini.
