Northampton
Northampton, Australia, UK, USA 1. UK (England): originally Hamtun and then Hampton ‘Home Farm’ from the Old English hām and tūn. ‘North’ was added later to give Northantone to distinguish it from Southampton. The county of Northamptonshire, abbreviated to Northants, takes its name from what was the most important city in the area with the additional scīr.2. USA (Massachusetts): originally a Native American settlement called Nonotuck ‘Middle of the River’. It was renamed after the English city in 1654.

Northampton
Northampton , city (1990 pop. 29,289), seat of Hampshire co., W Mass., on the Connecticut River; inc. as a town 1656, as a city 1883. Brushes, wire, optical devices, and plastic products are made in Northampton. It is the seat of Smith College and Clarke School for the Deaf. President Calvin Coolidge was a former mayor of Northampton; his papers and mementos are preserved in the Forbes Library. Jonathan Edwards was pastor there, and Sylvester Graham lived and is buried in the city. Historic Deerfield is nearby. |
