North Briton
North Briton was the satirical name John Wilkes gave to his weekly periodical, launched in June 1762 in opposition to Smollett's Briton, published in support of Bute's administration. It included severe attacks on the peace of Paris and general abuse of Scots. Issue no. 12 led to a duel between Wilkes and Lord Talbot, and when the government resolved in April 1763 to prosecute no. 45 as seditious libel, it let ‘Wilkes and Liberty’ out of the bottle.

North Briton
North Briton, a weekly political periodical founded in 1762 by Wilkes, in opposition to The Briton, which Smollett was conducting in the interests of Lord Bute. In this venture Wilkes was assisted by Charles Churchill, the author of The Rosciad. Wilkes's attacks on the government grew bolder, and in No. 45 he exposed himself to prosecution for libel. Though Wilkes was discharged on the ground of privilege, The North Briton was suppressed.
