North-West Frontier Province
North-West Frontier Province (NWFP) Province in nw Pakistan bounded by Afghanistan, located near the Khyber Pass; the capital is Peshawar. Important during the time of Alexander , in 1849 it became part of British India and was annexed to Pakistan in 1947. It is largely agricultural. Area: 106,200sq km (41,000sq mi). Pop. (1998) 17,555,000.

North-west Frontier Province
North-west Frontier Province A province of north-west Pakistan, in the Himalayas, the location of the strategic Khyber Pass to Afghanistan. Every great power in the region has sought to control the province, but its harsh terrain has allowed the inhabitants to remain semiautonomous.
