Brown, Norman O(liver)
Brown, Norman O[liver] (1913–2002), professor of classics and comparative literature at the University of California, Santa Cruz (1971– ), best known for his Life Against Death: The Psychoanalytic Meaning of History (1959), a Freudian study of human nature written in an aphoristic style. His other works include Love's Body (1966), an extension of the ideas in his earlier book; and Closing Time (1973), relating Vico's ideas to Finnegans Wake.
