Non-Objective art

Non-Objective art

Non-Objective art. A general term for abstract art that is intended to be completely non-representational, rather than derived (however remotely or obliquely) from appearances in the world around us; most commonly it is applied to severely geometrical works. The term was coined by Rodchenko, who used it in the title of some of his paintings (Non-Objective Painting: Black on Black, MOMA, New York, 1918). It is also particularly associated with Malevich, who in 1919 wrote: ‘In referring to non-objectivity, I merely wished to make it plain that Suprematism is not concerned with things, objects, etc.’ In 1927 the Bauhaus published a book by Malevich entitled Die gegenstandslose Welt, which appeared in English translation in 1959 as The Non-Objective World. The Guggenheim Museum in New York was originally called the Museum of Non-Objective Art.
