Nitra
Nitra, Slovakia Nitrahwa, Nitrau, Nitria A river and a town. There are two possibilities as to the meaning of the name. It may be from the former name of the river, Neid, which means ‘to flow’ or ‘to run’ and the Indo‐European ahwa ‘water’ or ‘river’; thus a ‘(place) where the river flows’. Alternatively, it may be derived from the Old Slavonic verb neit ‘to clear a forest by cutting or burning the trees’ and ‐a used with the names of rivers. Thus the name could mean either a ‘Settlement on the River’ or a ‘Settlement in a Clearing in the Forest’.
