Otto, Nikolaus August
Otto, Nikolaus August (1832–91) German engineer. In 1861, he built a gas-fired engine which won a gold medal at the 1867 Paris Exhibition. He later built an internal combustion engine based on a four-stroke cycle (also called the Otto cycle). See also four-stroke engine

Nikolaus August Otto , 1832–91, German engineer. He was coinventor (1867) of an internal-combustion engine, and he devised (1876) the four-stroke Otto cycle, which was widely adopted for automobile, airplane, and other motors. |
