Nicopolis

Nicopolis [Gr.,=city of victory], ancient city, NW Greece, in Epirus. It was founded by Octavian (later Augustus) to celebrate the victory (31 BC) at Actium, which is nearby. The city largely eclipsed Ambracia. It is mentioned by St. Paul (Titus 3.12). Its ruins are near the modern Préveza.

Nicopolis, Greece Ruins also known as Nicopolis Actia or Nikópolis. A city founded by Augustus to commemorate his victory (when he was known as Octavian) at Actium in 31 bc over Mark Antony (c.82–30 bc), a supporter of Julius Caesar and triumvir. The name means ‘City of Victory’ from the Greek nikē ‘victory’ and polis.
