NIBLO'S GARDEN

NIBLO'S GARDEN was a famous nineteenth-century coffeehouse and theater on lower Broadway Avenue in New York City. Operas, concerts, and plays were presented there for several decades beginning in 1824. The 1866 opening of Charles M. Barras's The Black Crook at Niblo's Garden is considered by some to have been the first performance of an American musical. The structure was destroyed by fire in 1846, but it was rebuilt, and the new theater opened in 1849. It burned again in 1872, was rebuilt, and was transformed into a concert hall. The building was finally demolished in 1895.
