Newhaven E. Sussex. Newehaven 1587. ‘Newly built harbour’, from ME haven (OE hæfen). Its old name was Mechingas 1121, Mecinges 1204, ‘(settlement of) the family or followers of a man called *Mēce’, from OE pers. name + -ingas.

Newhaven

Newhaven, England/UK Mechingas, Mecinges, Newehaven ‘New Harbour’ from the Old English nīwe and hæfen ‘harbour’. It became ‘new’ in 1570 after the lower course of the River Ouse was changed. Its earlier name meant ‘Mēce's Family Settlement’ from an Old English personal name and ‐ingas.
